Last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/business\/2014\/08\/28\/happy-ending-for-market-basket-employees-customers\/8DYrQ8orJYtvHM1BdYSEyK\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Market Basket imbroglio<\/a> occurred while we were away; we&#8217;re curious if anything similar happens this year.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 0: Getting There<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-935\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Girls-hamming-it-up.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-935\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Girls-hamming-it-up.png\" alt=\"Hawksnest Nature Preserve, Cape Cod\" width=\"150\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Girls-hamming-it-up.png 150w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Girls-hamming-it-up-76x300.png 76w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 85vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hawksnest Nature Preserve, Cape Cod<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Going away for a week&#8217;s vacation always leads to more work just so you can relax.\u00a0 After a very busy week at work, I still had significant cleaning to do around the house &#8212; I don&#8217;t really want our pet sitter to know that we live like this.<\/p>\n<p>Preparations are complicated because we choose to take Butter, the dog, back to her old day care in Willimantic for boarding.\u00a0 (We haven&#8217;t found boarding near us that is satisfactory, due to arbitrary breed restrictions, but Marty&#8217;s is also located near Baba&#8217;s house so it&#8217;s not entirely inconvenient.)\u00a0 Meghan and Beta left Saturday morning and drove to the cape with Baba, leaving the bulk of the work for me.\u00a0 By lunchtime Alpha and I were ready to roll!<\/p>\n<p>Traffic to the cape was moderate, more than we&#8217;ve experienced in the past, but we normally go later in the afternoon due to other obligations.\u00a0 I think next year we&#8217;ll just wait until later in the afternoon for an easier drive &#8212; whether we have obligations or not.<\/p>\n<p>We left our respective locations at different times without coordinating but somehow Meghan and I arrived at the cape house within a couple of minutes of each other.\u00a0 Talk about timing!<\/p>\n<p>So long as Baba invites us to spend a week at the cape, we offer to prepare all the meals (except when she wants to treat).\u00a0 We immediately went back out to Orleans to go shopping for food and a package of spare underwear for one of the kids.\u00a0 (A poorly timed growth spurt.)<\/p>\n<p>After dinner the only ones who felt like moving were Beta and me, so we ventured out for ice cream.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a new-to-us place down the street called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Short+n+Sweet\/@41.6836849,-70.018716,14z\/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1sice+cream!3m1!1s0x89fb1511c8559d7d:0x4b4d027813a865f!5m1!1e1\" target=\"_blank\">Short n Sweet<\/a>.\u00a0 Good ice cream, but I was a little taken aback that they were cash-only &#8212; it&#8217;s not uncommon on the cape, but it wasn&#8217;t posted anywhere.\u00a0 I was short of cash but they gave us our ice cream anyway.\u00a0 I returned a few minutes later, after rolling Meghan for money, to settle up.<\/p>\n<p>Long day, so we went to bed early all around.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 1: Beach pt 1, Chatham pt 1<\/h1>\n<p>Sunday spawned a beautiful day.\u00a0 Megh whipped up a breakfast that couldn&#8217;t be beat, and we toddled out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Sea+Street+Beach+-+East+Dennis,+Sea+St,+South+Dennis,+MA+02660\/@41.7571993,-70.1488959,184m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb4734e3573b05:0x17af6a190dad67b9\" target=\"_blank\">Sea Street Beach<\/a> (a.k.a. Crows Nest Beach) in Dennis &#8211; our traditional bay-side destination.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_918\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-918\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Bronwyns-fake-mustaches.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-918\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Bronwyns-fake-mustaches.png\" alt=\"Beta's fake mustaches\" width=\"210\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beta purchased a package of fake mustaches in Yarmouth and modelled all of them when we got home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We got a late start, though, and arrived after the parking lot had filled up.\u00a0 No legal parking anywhere within walking distance.\u00a0 I gallantly offered to take the car out for a spin while the womenfolk got started on their ocean- and sun-bathing activities, thinking that if I came back at lunchtime (only 30-40 minutes hence) that one or more spots would open up.<\/p>\n<p>After coming back and confirming that no spaces existed, Baba offered to switch with me so I could enjoy the beach for a bit.\u00a0 She carries the luck of the Irish, though, because a spot opened up before she left the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>We were part of a group of people that made a minor faux pas and spread our blankets on the private side of an invisible property line on the beach.\u00a0 A geriatric citizen appeared around noon to inform us that we were infringing on &#8220;his&#8221; property, even though we were below the mean high tide mark.\u00a0 (The quotes will be explained momentarily.)\u00a0 He demanded that everyone move, but Meghan stood her ground and said she would be happy to move if <strong>asked<\/strong> &#8212; which he did, so we moved.\u00a0 I love this woman.<\/p>\n<p>A group of twenty-somethings took umbrage at this and verbally challenged this claim; the &#8220;owner&#8221; called the police and stood there to wait for them.\u00a0 The guys stood firm, <span style=\"-moz-text-decoration-style: wavy; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"taking photos and doubting his claim out loud; he really did dress funny with his socks pulled high, though\">poked some harmless fun at him,<\/span> and waited for the police because <span style=\"-moz-text-decoration-style: wavy; text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"I felt they were in the right, too, and applaud them for standing up\">they felt they were in the right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When the police arrived they calmly and politely let us know that the property actually has deeded rights to the water line, not the high-water mark.\u00a0 We also found out that this guy doesn&#8217;t actually own the property: his son does.\u00a0 The officer very expertly talked the twenty-somethings down as well, averting any more bad feelings.\u00a0 I think they respond to frequent calls from this guy when he&#8217;s in town, but the son is much more easy-going.\u00a0 Meghan actually called the station to talk to his supervisor, in order to compliment his performance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_940\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-940\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Megh-and-Adele-selfie.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-940 size-full\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Megh-and-Adele-selfie.png\" alt=\"Megh and Alpha selfie\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meghan and Alpha paused mini-golf for a selfie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The water was cold but clear, and I had a good time frolicking with the kids in the water.\u00a0 We left before sunburns could really get started.<\/p>\n<p>A plan for meals now in hand, Meghan and I headed back out with a shopping list.\u00a0 Among our purchases: a single package of 2 1\/2 dozen eggs, in addition to the dozen we had purchased the night before.\u00a0 That seems like an absurd number of eggs but we still ran short of eggs by day six, as well as pretty much everything else.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner of BBQ chicken sandwiches, Meghan and I ventured to downtown Chatham for a little date, while Baba watched the girls.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 2: Chatham pt 2<\/h1>\n<p>Weather: there were overnight rumbles of thunder.\u00a0 The day was hot and humid.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-945\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150722-Joan-at-the-beach.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-945\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150722-Joan-at-the-beach.png\" alt=\"Baba at the beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150722-Joan-at-the-beach.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150722-Joan-at-the-beach-179x300.png 179w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baba @ Harding Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We had a particularly late start, because hey we&#8217;re on vacation.\u00a0 The general desire was to head into town and poke around.<\/p>\n<p>We started at the west end of town, by the parking lot.\u00a0 At Beta&#8217;s insistence we popped into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/The+Black+Dog+General+Store\/@41.6826335,-69.9603132,18z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x60967ea73656f831\" target=\"_blank\">Black Dog shop<\/a>, where she found and fell in love with a giant (life-size) stuffed black dog toy.\u00a0 At $65 I immediately balked, but she had over $100 in savings and birthday money so we couldn&#8217;t really deny her request.<\/p>\n<p>We only delayed the inevitable by requesting she wait until the end of the day to make the purchase, hoping she would find something she wanted more, or forget about it, or listen to reason (our reason, not hers) that she should save her money for later.\u00a0 She did not do any of those things so we now own a giant stuffed black dog.<\/p>\n<p>I think Baba was worried that she would quickly tire of sandwiches, as she took us to lunch at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Chatham+Squire\/@41.6788038,-69.9575736,16.25z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x472d5c42f2b805c2\" target=\"_blank\">Chatham Squire<\/a> instead of letting us pack it at home.\u00a0 The food was generally good, but they had some of the best fried calamari I&#8217;ve had anywhere &#8212; tasty and light, not greasy at all.<\/p>\n<p>For dinner I made tacos with fajita-marinated chicken.\u00a0 Our plan of eating leftovers on Friday started to wane early, as there were no leftovers.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 3: Hawksnest, Yarmouth, Beach pt 2<\/h1>\n<p>Another lazy morning was in the offing, but I wanted to get to know the area.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a conservation area near our house that I wanted to see.\u00a0 Alpha was a little bored and wanted to go immediately; Beta decided that she wanted to go when she realized we might actually see wild animals.\u00a0 Meghan and Baba wanted nothing to do with activity so early in the morning (9:30 am).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-933\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Hawksnest-Preserve-Cape-Cod.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-933\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Hawksnest-Preserve-Cape-Cod.png\" alt=\"Hawksnest Preserve, Cape Cod\" width=\"500\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Hawksnest-Preserve-Cape-Cod.png 500w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Hawksnest-Preserve-Cape-Cod-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 85vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hawksnest Preserve in Harwich, Cape Cod<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The preserve is decently sized and pretty, but it all appears to be new-growth forest.\u00a0 I figure it can&#8217;t be more than 30-40 years old, based on the tree-trunk widths.\u00a0 The only wild animal we saw, besides birds, was a Fowler&#8217;s toad.\u00a0 We all got to hold it a moment before sending it back on it&#8217;s way.\u00a0 I&#8217;m very proud of my girls that they don&#8217;t shy away from things like going hiking and holding toads.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch we all left Baba at home and cruised to Yarmouth for some shameless vacation fun.\u00a0 We tried <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Wild+Animal+Lagoon\/@41.6553222,-70.2582642,14z\/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1smini+golf!3m1!1s0x89fb39628c2d4705:0x62c391c32a85e2c\">a mini-golf place with animals all over<\/a>, checked out a few stores in search of boogie boards, and stopped at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Cape+Cod+Salt+Water+Taffy\/@41.656546,-70.205232,11z\/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1ssalt+water+taffy!3m1!1s0x89fb3a3a68c7bd77:0xa141559d87918bd1\" target=\"_blank\">our traditional salt-water-taffy-store<\/a>.\u00a0 The afternoon was pretty hot and humid, with the occasional sprinkle, so we kept the convertible&#8217;s top up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-919\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Boogie-boarding-at-Harding-Beach.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-919 size-medium\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Boogie-boarding-at-Harding-Beach-300x202.png\" alt=\"Boogie boarding at Harding Beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Boogie-boarding-at-Harding-Beach-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Boogie-boarding-at-Harding-Beach.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boogie boarding at Harding Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After we got back we met up with Baba, who had spent the afternoon at the beach and wanted to go back.\u00a0 The girls jumped in their bathing suits and headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Harding+Beach,+Chatham,+MA+02633\/@41.6662227,-69.9941824,15z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb1456fbe5fa61:0xb6ac13c245c44870\" target=\"_blank\">Harding beach<\/a> while I ran to the store for an impromptu dinner on the beach: bread, cheese, and grapes (our so-called French dinner).<\/p>\n<p>The ocean-side water was surprisingly warm so we ate and swam until a fog rolled in and the breezy air became chillier than the water.<\/p>\n<p>To finish the night, we took the kids to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Schoolhouse+Ice+Cream\/@41.6711714,-70.0571866,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb3e2f5bb4bb37:0xcb7f392392f22758\" target=\"_blank\">Schoolhouse Ice Cream<\/a>.\u00a0 We really like their ice cream better than Sundae School (but Sundae School has better atmosphere).\u00a0 We sat outside and ate our ice cream and met a local young woman named Emily.\u00a0 She mistook us for someone else, but we wound up talking until it was time to bundle the girls home for a very late bed time.\u00a0 (An aside: I&#8217;m pretty sure Emily has Asperger&#8217;s; both my brother and my older daughter are diagnosed aspies so I tend to recognize them quickly.\u00a0 I purposely engaged her in conversation, but I went easy because I didn&#8217;t want anyone to be uncomfortable.\u00a0 She was very nice and seemed a little happy to be social for a bit.)<\/p>\n<h1>Day 4: Beach pt 3 &amp; 4<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_922\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-922\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Fog-rolling-in-at-Harding-Beach.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-922\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Fog-rolling-in-at-Harding-Beach.png\" alt=\"Fog rolling in at Harding Beach\" width=\"200\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fog rolling in at Harding Beach. It went from sunny to this in about 15 minutes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I really dig hiking, especially on vacation when I can go to all-new places.\u00a0 I had noticed on the maps that there&#8217;s another nature preserve at the south-eastern tip of Chatham, which is also the south-eastern tip of Cape Cod.<\/p>\n<p>Neither kid was interested in hiking on this fine day, but Meghan was up and interested so we went out on an adventure together.<\/p>\n<p>Morris Island is part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/uploadedFiles\/Region_5\/NWRS\/North_Zone\/Eastern_Massachusetts_Complex\/Monomoy\/MorrisIslandTrailBrochure.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Monomy National Wildlife Refuge<\/a>.\u00a0 Contrary to what the name implies, Morris Island can be driven to, while the rest of the refuge can only be accessed by boat.<\/p>\n<p>We hiked about a quarter of the shoreline (plus a brief detour into the interior to see where a particular trail through the marsh led to) before turning around.\u00a0 We stumbled across a number of horseshoe crab molts, including three perfect ones that we brought home, as well as some live starfish that were caught on the sand as the tide went out and one old snail shell with some possibly-live oysters inside.\u00a0 We moved the living things back to the water&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p>We were all hungry when we got back, as no-one had eaten breakfast &#8212; Meghan and I didn&#8217;t eat before leaving so that we could leave early, and everyone else was apparently uninterested in actually making food.\u00a0 It was almost lunch time, so Baba took us out to an awesome lunch at a newly-discovered diner for locals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Larry%27s+PX\/@41.6824703,-69.9926511,17z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb14e5db5e022b:0x9b2a5fef27d37787\" target=\"_blank\">Larry&#8217;s PX<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the kind of place that hangs a &#8220;Sorry, We&#8217;re Open&#8221; sign on the door, and the local cops eat here.\u00a0 Our mixed breakfast and lunch totally lived up to expectations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-917\" style=\"width: 643px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Megh-and-Adele-minigolfing-in-Yarmouth.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-917 size-full\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Megh-and-Adele-minigolfing-in-Yarmouth.png\" alt=\"Megh and Alpha, minigolfing in Yarmouth\" width=\"643\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Megh-and-Adele-minigolfing-in-Yarmouth.png 643w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150721-Megh-and-Adele-minigolfing-in-Yarmouth-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minigolfing in Yarmouth. It took forever to get Alpha to crack a smile.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Afterwards Baba and Megh went shopping at the local pottery places, while the girls and I tagged along.\u00a0 The girls were bickering a bit so I started making plans to split them up for a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Pottery shopping done with minimal damage to our wallets, Baba and I took Beta to a different bay-side beach in Brewster called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Robbins+Hill+Beach,+Brewster,+MA+02631\/@41.7623309,-70.1086299,15z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb40fcbe9e94ed:0x550c592f1c177732\" target=\"_blank\">Robbins Hill beach<\/a>.\u00a0 Much like Sea Street beach the slope is very flat; the water was somewhat dirty with life, but the tide was high so that may have been responsible for washing in extra junk.\u00a0 It was a small, almost personal beach and the parking fees in Brewster end at 3 pm (instead of 4 pm in Dennis), so I think we&#8217;ll go back again.<\/p>\n<p>Tim and Delta were due to arrive in a bit so we stopped at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Harwich+East+Liquors\/@41.7067509,-70.0220012,16.5z\/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1sliquor+store+near+East+Harwich,+Harwich,+MA!3m1!1s0x89fb1534272919fd:0xd05b369fd86eefc2\" target=\"_blank\">the local liquor store<\/a> to pick up a little wine and beer.\u00a0 It was seriously disappointing and we won&#8217;t be going back.<\/p>\n<p>Tim arrived shortly after we finished dinner, and sooner than he should have if he had obeyed all traffic laws.\u00a0 I, personally, was glad they came.\u00a0 Living in a house with four women and no men gets old very quickly.\u00a0 At home I have a cat for male company, at least.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 5: Nantucket<\/h1>\n<p>We have a rotation of &#8220;specials&#8221;: one year we go on a whale watch (or similar), one year we go to Martha&#8217;s Vineyard, and one year we go to Nantucket.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_944\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-944\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Tim-and-Dima-on-Nantucket.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-944\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Tim-and-Dima-on-Nantucket.png\" alt=\"Tim and Delta on Nantucket\" width=\"300\" height=\"558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Tim-and-Dima-on-Nantucket.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Tim-and-Dima-on-Nantucket-161x300.png 161w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim and Delta @ downtown Nantucket. Master\/Blaster?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With Tim and Delta on-board for Nantucket, we set out in search of tickets.\u00a0 There are three ferry options that we know of: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nantucketislandferry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nantucket Fast Ferry<\/a> out of Harwich (very convenient to get to from Chatham); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hylinecruises.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hy-Line Cruises<\/a> (consistently lowest price); and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steamshipauthority.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steamship Authority<\/a> (the priciest option, but most frequent sailings).<\/p>\n<p>After finding out that Groupon had some expired deals for the other ferries (WTF Groupon!), I found a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steamshipauthority.com\/visitors\/ways_to_save\" target=\"_blank\">special weekday-only deal<\/a> for SSA out of Hyannis on SSA&#8217;s own website, which made it cheaper than the other options by quite a bit.\u00a0 I guess the overall higher prices give them some wiggle room for specials.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan and I were up really early, before 6 am, because that&#8217;s our normal schedule.\u00a0 The rest of the house, not so much.\u00a0 I think Baba wanted to treat a nice breakfast for everyone at Larry&#8217;s PX, but we ran out of time and skipped it.<\/p>\n<p>That we didn&#8217;t stop for breakfast before the ferry was probably best.\u00a0 We made it to Hyannis, found parking and a shuttle, and made the ferry with some time to spare &#8212; but only 20 minutes, not the hour or more a sit-down breakfast would have taken.\u00a0 We made-do by grabbing a bite at a kiosk in the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry trip was pretty routine, not much to say except that it was packed full and we all sat in pairs, scattered across the boat.<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop after arriving was a couple benches to eat our lunch: PB&amp;J and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yankeemagazine.com\/article\/food\/fluffernutter\" target=\"_blank\">fluffernutters<\/a>.\u00a0 When we had finished, we turned around and realized we were sitting in front of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Whaling+Museum\/@41.2859236,-70.1053766,14.25z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x6f8cea367f541766\" target=\"_blank\">Whaling Museum<\/a>.\u00a0 This became our second stop.<\/p>\n<p>The Whaling Museum is arguably one of the best small museums that I have ever attended.\u00a0 They have well-thought-out exhibits that provide interest; they have unique artifacts, from paintings to period items, from an actual whale skeleton to the last remaining whale-oil press known to exist.<\/p>\n<p>We sat for a talk on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Essex_%28whaleship%29\" target=\"_blank\">Essex<\/a>, a whaling ship that was known to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massmoments.org\/moment.cfm?mid=334\" target=\"_blank\">attacked and sunk by a sperm whale<\/a> and served as the inspiration for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moby-Dick\" target=\"_blank\">Moby Dick<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 The presenter stayed for Q&amp;A afterwards and was highly knowledgeable and pleasant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-948\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Whale-skeleton-at-Whaling-Museum.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-948 size-large\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Whale-skeleton-at-Whaling-Museum-1024x562.png\" alt=\"Whale skeleton at Whaling Museum\" width=\"474\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Whale-skeleton-at-Whaling-Museum-1024x562.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Whale-skeleton-at-Whaling-Museum-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Whale-skeleton-at-Whaling-Museum.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 85vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adult sperm whale skeleton hanging in the Whaling Museum in Nantucket. This is NOT from a hunted whale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meghan, who had been to the museum before, kindly kept the littlest ones busy in the kids room while the rest of us explored the museum.\u00a0 She was eventually spelled by Baba, and Megh and I had a fun time following an exhibit about the Essex where you pick a crewman and uncover his fate (died, eaten, or survived).<\/p>\n<p>After staying for a couple of hours, we finally re-entered the present day.\u00a0 We walked around a bit, did a circuit around the block, I bought ice cream for the kids, and we considered an early dinner.\u00a0 We uncovered a tavern called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Brotherhood+of+Thieves\/@41.285221,-70.0995491,17.75z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x67f7df649ef279cf\" target=\"_blank\">Brotherhood of Thieves<\/a> that seemed intriguing.\u00a0 The atmosphere actually matched the name &#8211; dark, low-ceilinged, a little moody.\u00a0 The service was attentive, the nacho appetizer was excellent, the entr\u00e9es were delicious (and probably too big &#8211; we all left food on our plates), and the prices were exorbitantly high.\u00a0 (I&#8217;m not considering the premium for eating on the island when I say that &#8211; other restaurants were probably comparably priced, but I was a little taken aback.)<\/p>\n<p>I pause here to note something: Nantucket is preppy central.\u00a0 Megh and I noticed a preponderance of kids and adolescents in the &#8216;preppy summer uniform:&#8217; guys in polo shirt, khaki shorts or pants, and topsiders without socks, and a particular Kennedy-esque haircut (not <em>too<\/em> short); girls in thigh-length one-piece dresses.\u00a0 The adults were in the adult version of the same: men in khaki shorts, nice shirts, and possibly sandals; women in shorts or pants, and polo shirts or button-down shirts.<\/p>\n<p>After dinner we split up and wandered downtown in groups.\u00a0 At one point Meghan had Beta and was watching Delta, and lost him to &#8216;potty tourism&#8217; in a book store.\u00a0 We all converged on the store but he was located quickly by Tim (who was aware of his tendencies).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-952\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Drying-out-her-tongue.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-952\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Drying-out-her-tongue-196x300.png\" alt=\"Beta drying out her tongue\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Drying-out-her-tongue-196x300.png 196w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150723-Drying-out-her-tongue.png 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 85vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As we drove to the Nantucket ferry Beta decided to dry her tongue out, to see just how dry it could get. She seemed to find the experience interesting, but it didn&#8217;t impede the remainder of her day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The book store was also site of a funny shared experience of sorts.\u00a0 I was people-watching outside the book store after the potty-tourism incident, Baba was shopping down the street, and Meghan was back inside.\u00a0 A couple walked in the door, both probably about fifteen years old.\u00a0 The girl was mostly unremarkable in her white dress but the boy was in full preppy regalia.\u00a0 They both looked conspicuously uncomfortable, as if they were on a date and trying hard (too hard) to impress both each other and strangers.\u00a0 Independently, Baba noticed them down the street, I noticed them going into the store, and Meghan noticed them shopping in the store.\u00a0 We realized it later when we were comparing notes, because they stood out to all of us enough to mention to each other.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan and I took the girls outside the downtown a bit to see the houses and non-shopping sites, like some pocket parks and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nantucketpreservation.org\/380-380\" target=\"_blank\">Coffin School<\/a>.\u00a0 We all met up on the pier for the 6:15 ferry and had another pleasant ferry ride back to the mainland.\u00a0 The shuttle bus was standing-room-only back to the car.<\/p>\n<p>The ride home was practically made for a convertible.\u00a0 When we got off the Route 6 expressway Megh and I turned on the radio and caught a local rock station playing some late-80&#8217;s songs that we know well by REM and Tears For Fears.\u00a0 We sang along while cruising over local roads and the girls shrank into the back seat and tried to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Tim and I had passed each other a couple of times on route 6, which turned into race once we got off the expressway.\u00a0 (Tim took a different route than us.)\u00a0 Megh and I won, but barely, by rolling through a right-hand turn at a stop sign, and kind-of, sort-of cutting off Tim (who was about to come straight through the intersection).<\/p>\n<p>After getting home, I realized I was missing my &#8216;home&#8217; key-ring: front and back doors, various retailer loyalty tags, and key-ring multi-tool.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no directly-identifying information so I&#8217;m not worried about burglars, and there weren&#8217;t any car keys so nothing will be expensive to replace, but I&#8217;m going to miss that particular multi-tool.\u00a0 Maybe a good samaritan will find them and return them to one of the stores I have a tag for, and the store will get them back to me.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 6: Beach pt 5, Chatham pt 3<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_950\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-950\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-950\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150724-Quinn-in-the-convertible.png\" alt=\"Dad\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dad driving to Nauset beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last year we discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Nauset+Beach\/@41.7884556,-69.9352979,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb6b2887d027ef:0xfd6f9869639b0f73\" target=\"_blank\">Nauset Beach<\/a> in Orleans, which has bigger surf than the southern-facing beaches in Chatham.\u00a0 The beach is long and made of fine white sand, except for the very edge of the water where erosion has left larger stones.\u00a0 We made a half-day of it this year.<\/p>\n<p>Alpha claimed in the morning that she didn&#8217;t want to go, and through some gentle prodding we uncovered part of the reason: she&#8217;s having body image issues.\u00a0 (She thinks she&#8217;s fat, which she&#8217;s not.\u00a0 Oh boy, this will be a loooong adolescence.)\u00a0 After lots of reassurances, plus some tickling to get her off the couch, we were finally ready to go &#8212; all of us: Baba, Joneslings, Tim, and Delta.<\/p>\n<p>Without storms in the area the surf was subdued compared to last year, but that&#8217;s all relative: it was still big enough to knock me on my ass when I chickened out on the cold water (which got me into the water anyway, of course, ready or not.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-954\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150724-Dima-remains-anonymous.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-954\" src=\"\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150724-Dima-remains-anonymous.png\" alt=\"Delta, anonymized\" width=\"325\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150724-Dima-remains-anonymous.png 325w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/20150724-Dima-remains-anonymous-300x291.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 85vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Delta preferred to remain anonymous, using Baba&#8217;s hat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The girls had a great time with their new boogie boards, riding the waves, while Megh and I worked our way out a bit until we could barely touch bottom &#8211; we were brave enough to go that far but not to tempt fate (and rip currents) out further.\u00a0 Delta, who is still a bit small for the waves, mostly played on the beach, digging holes in the sand and snatching rocks from the water line.<\/p>\n<p>There were a pair of seals in the area, cruising the beach about 50 yards out.\u00a0 They occasionally came in close and popped their heads up, and the pair came up to no more than 20 yards away from me, where we could stare at each other.\u00a0 That was cool.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike earlier days, we stayed during the &#8216;sunburn&#8217; hours: 10 am &#8211; 2 pm.\u00a0 Meghan and I were lightly burned on our upper arms and shoulders when we left.\u00a0 Baba and Tim had slathered up in sunscreen, and didn&#8217;t burn at all.\u00a0 They&#8217;re still bright white today, so I&#8217;m not sure which decision was better.\u00a0 Alpha and Beta were <span title=\"'Brown as a pagan baby' is something Joan picked up from Catholic school\">&#8220;brown as pagan babies&#8221;<\/span> before we went, and are even browner today.\u00a0 Alpha also has <span title=\"just some scrapes, they're already disappearing\">&#8220;battle scars&#8221;<\/span> on her legs from wading through the rocks at the water&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p>Delta missed his afternoon nap and tried to catch it on the way home, which led to a very unhappy youngster when we reached home and he woke back up.\u00a0 He recovered quickly, though, and powered through the rest of the day in good spirits.<\/p>\n<p>After washing up, Meghan and I headed to Chatham for another mini-date.\u00a0 Meghan picked up my next Christmas present (a gorgeous watercolored engraving) from one of the galleries, while we noshed on some iced drinks from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Carmine%27s\/@41.6818017,-69.9595656,19z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0000000000000000:0x6ef13a27a1cffc2c\" target=\"_blank\">Carmine&#8217;s<\/a>.\u00a0 We also stopped into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Gallery+Antonia\/@41.6816393,-69.958922,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89fb149f62be50a9:0x55ce6067503469c7\" target=\"_blank\">Gallery Antonia<\/a>, a fascinating high-end gallery owned by a rather classy and erudite man name Dominic.\u00a0 We enjoyed talking with him for a good twenty minutes about nothing in particular.<\/p>\n<p>We had planned a pizza-and-movie dinner for the family, and on Dominic&#8217;s recommendation we tried out the Sweet Tomato.\u00a0 They serve a fantastic thin-crust pizza; we tried Margherita, pepperoni, and Hawaiian-style pizzas.\u00a0 We also stopped into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Chatham+Liquor+Store+Inc\/@41.6841531,-69.964656,15z\/data=!4m5!1m2!2m1!1sliquor!3m1!1s0x89fb14a2f269a661:0xdcedf563c6880168\" target=\"_blank\">Chatham Liquor Store<\/a> next door and discovered a new sangria called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mijasangria.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mija<\/a> &#8212; Morris Island Nature Preserve, Cape Cod.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Day 7: Homeward Bound<\/h1>\n<p>The last day is always bittersweet: sad that vacation is over, but glad to be heading home.\u00a0 We all cleaned up, packed up, ran the dishwasher, and were ready to go with lots of time to spare before the final check-out time.<\/p>\n<p>We finally broke with a tradition this week: we did NOT go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Wee+Packet\/@41.660126,-70.1261374,15z\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x30f63a3896fd1080\" target=\"_blank\">Wee Packet<\/a> for Irish breakfast.\u00a0 We went back to Larry PX instead.\u00a0 Alpha was a little put out, but Larry PX puts on a very good meal, so she was satisfied with chocolate chip pancakes.<\/p>\n<p>After breakfast we headed for home while Baba, Tim, and Delta went to the beach for one last dip and to wait out the traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Our ride home was easy, the Sagamore bridge wasn&#8217;t too bad going west at noon.\u00a0 East-bound up to the bridge was backed up for miles, though.\u00a0 A small traffic snarl on route 3, but Waze took us through secondary roads to get around it, and we were home in about two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Upon arrival, Mel was very glad to see us and spent the afternoon rolling on the floor in front of us at every opportunity.\u00a0 Oolong had gone feral again while we were away and hissed at the kids, but calmed down and (mostly) returned to normal by bedtime.<\/p>\n<p>We picked up Butter from boarding the following day.\u00a0 She was most excited to see us; Mel was not excited to see her, though &#8212; I think he hoped we had lost her during the week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time for our annual trek to the Cape!
