{"id":281,"date":"2014-03-30T15:56:50","date_gmt":"2014-03-30T19:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/?p=281"},"modified":"2014-03-30T16:39:20","modified_gmt":"2014-03-30T20:39:20","slug":"agss-albacore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=281","title":{"rendered":"AGSS Albacore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the weather outside is rotten, the logical thing to do is find some indoor activities.\u00a0 Today was such a day so we went to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ussalbacore.org\/\">AGSS Albacore<\/a>, an experimental research submarine, in Portsmouth, NH.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209057328.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wp-1396209057328\" alt=\"Alpha child in a bunk\" src=\"\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209057328.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is one of the more spacious bunks. Some were in dark corners with equipment dangling over the bunk &#8211; close enough that if you rolled over you would knock it with your shoulder or hip.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The main museum is the submarine, with a nearly-full-access self-guided audio tour.\u00a0 By full-access I mean lying in the bunks, playing with the dive-plane controls, flipping switches, and turning dials.\u00a0 The engine room is completely open (visually, if not physically, since some of the more dangerous bits have barriers).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209156851.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wp-1396209156851\" alt=\"Crew's mess; Alpha child fixing her shoe\" src=\"\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209156851.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The crew&#8217;s mess doubles as a recreation area. Backgammon and checkers; I don&#8217;t think anyone had time to play chess (not a reflection on submariners &#8211; I&#8217;ve known a few that could beat me handily at chess)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was cool because it gave an idea of how the crew lived.\u00a0 Tight quarters everywhere and no wasted space.\u00a0 Fifty guys shared a couple of toilets; I can&#8217;t imagine the smell.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209185039.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wp-1396209185039\" alt=\"Itty-bitty toilet\" src=\"\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209185039.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"2667\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Why did they tile the floor?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The submarine itself was an experiment and was refit several times over its lifetime with enhancements like new propulsion, including an uncommon twin screw design.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209263584.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"wp-1396209263584\" alt=\"Twin screws\" src=\"\/\/jonesling.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wpid-wp-1396209263584.jpeg\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">I read up on submarine design before the trip. Twin counter-rotating screws like this are unusual, but several Soviet-Russian submarines sported them as well. This is one of the only examples in the American fleet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The experience is much better than touring the <a title=\"USS Nautilus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ussnautilus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">USS Nautilus<\/a>.\u00a0 The Nautilus is ok if you&#8217;ve never seen the inside of a submarine, but everything is off-limits so the tour takes five minutes (or less if you have small children).\u00a0 The guys in the museum office &#8220;don&#8217;t talk about the Nautilus&#8221; and felt quite a bit of pride in the openness of the Albacore vs. the Nautilus.\u00a0 We were in there for nearly three-quarters of an hour, and another half hour in the museum shop (including a video of how the got the submarine to it&#8217;s present location).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the weather outside is rotten, the logical thing to do is find some indoor activities.\u00a0 Today was such a day so we went to visit AGSS Albacore, an experimental research submarine, in Portsmouth, NH.
