Cod 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Highlights From Cape Cod<\/h1>\n<p>&#8220;Baba&#8221; plays the part of the matriarch and rents a house on the cape, then invites the families to come stay with her.\u00a0 Our responsibilities include making dinner (plus cleaning up) and enjoying ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>This year was one of the rainiest summers in a long time, among the top 5 since record keeping evening<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We went on a whale watch out of Provincetown on Wednesday.\u00a0 It was really foggy and we didn&#8217;t see any whales, or anything at all, for almost two the fog, we stumbled across some whales that really showed off for a bit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vjacLMT-h7M?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>We discovered Skaket Beach, on the bay side of Orleans, on a beautiful afternoon.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2797\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2797\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption retreats you can walk out very, very far.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2798\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2798\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img water<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are natural tide pools that trap crustaceans.\u00a0 The kids had fun hunting hermit crabs and minnows.\u00a0 Tim dug up a couple of steamers to show the kids what lives beneath the sand.<\/p>\n<p>Beta child made some new friends, as usual.\u00a0 Baba did, too, with a couple that lives in the next town over from us.\u00a0 Meghan and I had fun talking with them about local stuff, and listening to the husband grouse about local contractors and the crappy McMansions they put up.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of days into our stay, a local hawk mother decided that her chicks were ready to leave the nest.\u00a0 One of the three wasn&#8217;t quite ready and complained, loudly, every remaining day of our stay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/20210716-Fledgling-hawk.png 700w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/20210716-Fledgling-hawk-219x300.png 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This newly-fledged hawk haunted his former roosts while complaining, loudly, and calling for mom.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mother hawk, to her credit, never strayed too far away.\u00a0 The siblings showed up as well to coax him off his branch.\u00a0 This one, however, mostly hopped from tree to tree and demanded a nest and food.<\/p>\n<h2>Other highlights, of which there are no photos<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>We got Baba on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idletimesbikes.com\/\">a rented tricycle<\/a> and went a couple of miles up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/locations\/cape-cod-rail-trail\">Cape Code Rail Trail<\/a>.\u00a0 The Fox family rode their bikes all the way from Orleans to Wellfleet.<\/li>\n<li>I rode solo from Orleans to Wellfleet, and Orleans to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traillink.com\/trail-photo\/cape-cod-rail-trail_73756\/\">Harwich Rotary<\/a> a few days later<\/li>\n<li>We swam at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nauset_Beach\">Nauset Beach<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/caco\/planyourvisit\/coast-guard-beach-eastham.htm\">Coast Guard Beach<\/a><\/li>\n<li>We walked around downtown Orleans and Chatham<\/li>\n<li>We got a perfect lunch at <a href=\"https:\/\/theknackcapecod.com\/\">The Knack<\/a>, an excellent dinner at <a href=\"https:\/\/mahoneysatlantic.com\/\">Mahoney&#8217;s Atlantic Bar &amp; Grill<\/a>, and delicious ice cream at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icecreamcafe.com\/\">Ice Cream Cafe<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Megh, Beta, and I went to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frenchcablestationmuseum.org\/\">French Cable Museum<\/a> and had a great time!
