{"id":1944,"date":"2018-07-01T22:25:51","date_gmt":"2018-07-02T02:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=1944"},"modified":"2018-07-03T09:14:07","modified_gmt":"2018-07-03T13:14:07","slug":"maine-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=1944","title":{"rendered":"Maine 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We made an impromptu trip to Maine with our friends Sam and Joanne.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a back-story: we were supposed to be camping this week with Sam and Joanne (and others) but a conflict with school forced some to cancel, and eventually everyone canceled.\u00a0 Since we all had the time off already scheduled I had the idea for a quick road trip with S&amp;J.\u00a0 Meghan made the arrangements when they bought in, so game on.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1950\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1950\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1950\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180629-dock.png\" alt=\"dock and reflection\" width=\"600\" height=\"370\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Found this very stereotypical Maine view while biking on Friday morning<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Day 1: Foul Weather, Destination Southport<\/h1>\n<p>We left home on Thursday.\u00a0 S&amp;J had the longer drive, but our house was on the way so we met up here and caravaned the rest of the way together.<\/p>\n<p>A bundle of rain followed them from Connecticut, and would continue to follow us all the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<p>Meghan and I neglected to pack until they arrived, as we were running around all morning doing chores, so they got in a short, much-needed break from driving in the rain.<\/p>\n<p>We rolled into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceangateresort.com\/\">the Ocean Gate hotel<\/a> around 5 pm.\u00a0 We had rented three rooms: one for S&amp;J and their son; one for Alpha and Beta; and one for Meghan, me, and Butter-the-dog.\u00a0 We were spread across different buildings in the resort, but the girls were close to S&amp;J so that was ok.<\/p>\n<p>Our room, unlike the others, had a full kitchen \u2014 indeed, that was one of the selling points for us.\u00a0 It was billed as &#8220;not having a view&#8221; but that was a lie: the view was, in fact, beautiful.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1952\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180630-sunrise.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1952\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180630-sunrise.png\" alt=\"sunrise\" width=\"700\" height=\"524\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunrise on Saturday morning. I didn&#8217;t mean to wake up at 5 am, but I&#8217;m glad I did since I got to see this.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We went out to dinner at a tiny-but-tony restaurant called <a href=\"https:\/\/oliversrestaurant.com\/\">Oliver&#8217;s at Cozy Harbor<\/a>.\u00a0 The food was excellent, btw.\u00a0 Joanne went high-end and got a &#8220;lobstertini,&#8221; lobster meat served in a martini glass, but most everyone else went basic with burgers or fish-and-chips.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1945\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1945\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180628-dinner.png\" alt=\"group photo\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sitting down to dinner at Oliver&#8217;s. Everyone was tired. and nobody but the server saw me taking the picture, which is why everyone looks bored<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We did check out some of the &#8220;traditional&#8221; Maine sight-seeing, which is to say we took pictures of the fog:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1947\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1947\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180628-view-from-olivers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1947 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180628-view-from-olivers-thumbnail.png\" alt=\"foggy harbor\" width=\"400\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1947\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The very foggy view from Oliver&#8217;s [click to expand]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h1>Day 2: Swimming, Shopping, Dinner at Home<\/h1>\n<p>Sam and I started Friday off with a bang: we went biking.\u00a0 The kids started off with fun: they went swimming in the pool.\u00a0 Meghan and Joanne started off with style: they took a dip in the hot tub.<\/p>\n<p>After everyone felt ready to start their day, we packed into the cars and took a short ride to Boothbay Harbor.\u00a0 It was hot so we had an ice cream lunch.\u00a0 The girls shopped, while I took Butter on a walk up and down the main drag.\u00a0 She&#8217;s truly an adorable dog and we stopped to talk to several people that wanted to &#8220;say hi&#8221; to her.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1951\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1951\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180629-sam.png\" alt=\"sam in kayak\" width=\"360\" height=\"408\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam braved rumbles of thunder to discover that a nearby island is not, in fact, an island.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We all took a siesta in the late afternoon back at the hotel, except for Sam who ignored the impending thunderstorm and went kayaking.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief downpour and a bit of lightning, we got going on our planned &#8220;traditional get together&#8221; dinner: spaghetti and sauce.\u00a0 This is why the in-room kitchen was important, you see.<\/p>\n<p>For years, when we lived near each other, we would gather at one house or the other and feed everyone with a simple pasta, meat sauce, and garlic bread dinner.\u00a0 From time to time we do it even now, but the drive is much longer.<\/p>\n<p>I made the pasta, Sam made the garlic bread, and the kids watched TV.\u00a0 This was about as traditional as you can get without being home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1949\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180629-dinner.png\" alt=\"preparing dinner\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After dinner I washed up while everyone else played a game at the table until bedtime.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 3: Freeport and Home<\/h1>\n<p>Our stay was intentionally short because we were trying a too-good-to-be-true hotel and everything came together last-minute.\u00a0 Much too short.<\/p>\n<p>After a big breakfast we packed up and rolled out, destination: <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Ad6B3BZdQBR2\">Freeport<\/a>.\u00a0 Sam had only passed through Maine before, never stopping, and Joanne has never been at all.\u00a0 Both wanted to see the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.llbean.com\/\">L.L. Bean<\/a> store in Freeport.\u00a0 Meghan is always game to go there.\u00a0 I walked around with Butter while everyone wandered inside the store for an hour because I just can&#8217;t even.\u00a0 We also made time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benjerry.com\/freeport\">Ben and Jerry&#8217;s store<\/a>, of course.<\/p>\n<p>We made our final leg home, where S&amp;J paid us a final visit before making their way home as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We made an impromptu trip to Maine with our friends Sam and Joanne.
