{"id":1593,"date":"2017-07-01T17:43:21","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T21:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=1593"},"modified":"2017-07-02T17:45:46","modified_gmt":"2017-07-02T21:45:46","slug":"camping-hammonasset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=1593","title":{"rendered":"Camping @ Hammonasset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our southern friends from Connecticut invited us to go camping at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.gov\/deep\/cwp\/view.asp?a=2716&amp;q=325210&amp;deepNav_GID=1650%20\">Hammonasset Beach State Park<\/a> with them.\u00a0 They go every year as a big party, with family and friends.<\/p>\n<p>I only recently found out that this is a thing; our neighbors\/friends from across the street go up to a campsite in New Hampshire every year to meet with other friends, some of whom they only know from camping.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_1595\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1595\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Campsite.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1595\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Tent.png\" alt=\"tent\" width=\"336\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Tent.png 336w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Tent-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 85vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our tent [click to see more of our campsite]<\/figcaption><\/figure>This was our first time going camping as a family, ever.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve gone deep-woods camping by myself. (No facilities, no roads, no people, no nothing &#8212; I&#8217;ve never smelled worse than three nights of that.)\u00a0 Meghan had been camping at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pennsicwar.org\/\">Pennsic<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gulfwars.org\/\">Gulf Wars<\/a> during college.\u00a0 (She has stories that amaze.)\u00a0 Beta has been overnight camping (in cabins) as part of Girl Scouts.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve all been &#8220;camping&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=114\">in the backyard<\/a>.\u00a0 This trip was a first for being away from home and trucking everything we would need.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 1<\/h1>\n<p>We arrived mid-afternoon and immediately set to pitching our tent, figuring that there could be nothing worse than setting up a tent in the dark when you&#8217;re exhausted.\u00a0 Though the tent was new and this was our first time, it went up pretty quickly and cleanly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1594\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1594\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1594\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Everybody.png\" alt=\"Jones's and Gailey's\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Everybody.png 600w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170626-Everybody-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jones&#8217;s and Gaileys. The Gailey&#8217;s custom campaign tent is in the background; behind are a couple of Hobie Cats that we sailed the next day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our friends provided dinner: our traditional Friday night get-together victuals, spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread, only on a Monday.\u00a0 Being experienced campers with a lot more room to pack stuff, they graciously offered to provide dinner for the two nights we were there.\u00a0 After dinner there were s&#8217;mores around a communal campfire, where we got to meet the rest of the party \u2014 more Gaileys and some family friends.<\/p>\n<p>There were kids of all ages, including a few that were right around Alpha and Beta&#8217;s ages.\u00a0 They played <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foam_weapon\">boffer<\/a> swords until dark, then convinced a couple of us adults to play manhunt.<\/p>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t tuck into bed until about 10 pm.\u00a0 As the kids washed up some of us gathered around to chat and stargaze, and we were able to point out some satellites going by.\u00a0 The other adults hadn&#8217;t known that you could see them so easily.\u00a0 Schwing!<\/p>\n<p>Sleep, for a variety of reasons, was somewhat elusive the first night, except for Alpha who can sleep through pretty much anything.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 2<\/h1>\n<p>We started the day with pancakes, eggs, and bacon.\u00a0 The Gaileys possess a propane-fired flattop grill which made cooking a breeze.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1600\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170627-Quinn-and-Sam.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170627-Quinn-and-Sam-cropped.png\" alt=\"sailing away\" width=\"200\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quinn and Sam, sailing to Tahiti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sam wanted to get the two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hobie_Cat\">Hobie Cats<\/a> they brought along into the water.\u00a0 We got to the beach and set to rigging them, then took ourselves and the kids out for some sails.<\/p>\n<p>We were at the beach for about four hours, and as a group we only got slightly burned \u2014 I had planned ahead and coaxed the girls into going to the beach with me for a week leading up to the trip.\u00a0 Meghan got a bit burned across the shoulders, and oddly enough <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?page_id=1604\">Mu<\/a> (the junior Gailey) got sunburned on the tops of his feet.<\/p>\n<p>After packing the boats back onto their trailer, we headed back to camp (with a detour into town to get aloe) in order to make dinner.\u00a0 Second night was a communal pot luck, with hot dogs, hamburgers, and a bunch of sides.\u00a0 We got to know the other campers in the party and found that we have a lot in common.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1602\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1602\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170627-Rainbow.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1602\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20170627-Rainbow-150x150.png\" alt=\"rainbow\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1602\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A passing shower gave us a rainbow&#8230; over the campsite bathrooms.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rain, which had been holding off all day, finally came in the form of a few brief showers and a rumble of thunder.\u00a0 I checked the weather radar back home and, wouldn&#8217;t you know it, heavy storms were moving through our town.\u00a0 (I love thunderstorms but seem to have a repelling effect on them.\u00a0 Even the strongest storms peter out as they reach our area.)<\/p>\n<p>We took the opportunity to coax the girls into bed a bit earlier, though sleep was still hard to find the second night.\u00a0 Besides possibly being over-tired, the temperature dropped to nearly 50\u00b0\u00a0F so everyone (except me) was cold despite blankets.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 3<\/h1>\n<p>We all got up early to a beautiful morning.\u00a0 Meghan and Joanne took a walk back out to the beach to look for some bald eagles we had noticed the day before.<\/p>\n<p>Checkout is 12 pm, and we planned to swing through Noank on the way home to see the folks, so we packed up the campsite right after breakfast (more bacon, eggs, and pancakes, plus sausages) and hung out with the Gaileys until it was time to go.<\/p>\n<p>We bid adieu and headed out right at noon, spent a few hours having lunch and visiting with Mom and Dad Jones, plus Katie Jones and Eta (my niece).\u00a0 We made it home just in time to get Butter out of doggie daycare.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our southern friends from Connecticut invited us to go camping at Hammonasset Beach State Park with them.\u00a0 They go every year as a big party, with family and friends.
