{"id":1160,"date":"2016-01-02T16:37:10","date_gmt":"2016-01-02T21:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=1160"},"modified":"2022-04-22T18:54:33","modified_gmt":"2022-04-22T22:54:33","slug":"hiking-the-fells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/?p=1160","title":{"rendered":"Hiking the Fells"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1161\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1161\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1161\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160102-hiking-the-fells.png\" alt=\"Beta and Butter leading the way\" width=\"230\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160102-hiking-the-fells.png 230w, https:\/\/blog.jonesling.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/20160102-hiking-the-fells-108x300.png 108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 85vw, 230px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beta and Butter leading the way<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beta and I seem to be the more adventuresome side of the family.\u00a0 Today we went hiking in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/eea\/agencies\/dcr\/massparks\/region-north\/middlesex-fells-reservation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Middlesex Fells Reservation<\/a> because we&#8217;d never been.<\/p>\n<p>For our first look-around, I chose to start near the off-leash area at the Sheepfold, thinking we might be able to let Butter off her leash for a bit.\u00a0 Sadly, the area is not fenced in at all, and she won&#8217;t come on command when there are any distractions.\u00a0 (Butter will come when called at home, she&#8217;s not totally devoid of training, but the possibilities of squirrels and other dogs and dead things to roll around in are just too much for her to resist.)<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Lower+Sheep+Fold+Parking+Lot,+Stoneham,+MA+02180\/@42.452589,-71.1065564,18z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89e3740daa8415d5:0x66701b120f5a64ab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sheepfold parking area<\/a>, there&#8217;s a straight shot up to the Bear Hill observation tower (about a mile) so we headed up.\u00a0 The view from the top is impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Beta brought along a book to identify animal tracks, and we found some animal tracks that were neither human nor dog &#8212; we think they were bobcat.<\/p>\n<p>Unbeknownst to me Beta did NOT bring socks, however, and her waterproof boots quickly gave her a blister.\u00a0 We discovered this at the tower, so we turned around and headed home a bit earlier than I had planned.\u00a0 She promised me that she would bring socks next time, and she was so miserable by the end of the hike that I kind of believe her this time.\u00a0 I think she enjoyed the hike otherwise, though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beta and I seem to be the more adventuresome side of the family.\u00a0 Today we went hiking in the Middlesex Fells Reservation because we&#8217;d never been.
